Helping Tanzanian youth thrive today

& dream about tomorrow.

Toa Tumaini Foundation is a nonprofit organization that improves access to education for Tanzanian children from pre-k through 12th grade.

The system isn’t built to help kids in Tanzania thrive.

Children in Tanzania want to attend school, but the education system isn’t built to support the growing number of students in need. Due to systemic and financial barriers, Tanzanian children and families face significant challenges in accessing quality education.

Without access to quality education,

  • children lose the opportunity to pursue their dreams
  • parents have to choose between food and school for their kids
  • the cycle of poverty continues

Imagine a world where all kids can dream of tomorrow.

Education lays a foundation for children to thrive now while dreaming of their futures. When you donate to Toa Tumaini, your generosity today fuels future dreams.

Donations fuel programs that provide:

  • Pre-school education (including transportation)
  • Access to primary and secondary school
  • School supplies and uniforms
  • 1-2 meals per day
  • Health insurance in special cases
  • Emergency services (medical care, bedding, funeral services, etc.)

Give today and help a child in Tanzania thrive.

B dreams of being a doctor.

B was born with an enlarged heart and other medical conditions that interfered with his ability to move around and live the way most kids do every day.

When our team first met B, he wasn’t attending school. Instead, he stayed home with his mom or neighbors. His family didn’t think he would be able to attend school, so they kept him home. But instead, he was welcomed with open arms.

In school, B flourished. To this day, he is one of the brightest and most engaged students we have in our programs. He regularly excels in his lessons and never gives up.

Education impacts entire family units

When Y’s mother came to us, she was struggling with the cost of living, including basic needs like buying food. She has five children and does not have the funds to pay for their education. She felt stuck and unsure of how to move forward.

Since accessing TTF’s programs, the benefits of education have spread to his entire family.  Y’s mother didn’t have access to education as a child and has shared that her son teaches her what he is learning in school. Y’s education is helping his entire family thrive.

Co-founded on a shared belief in equal access to education

Fourteen years ago, our co-founder, Kelsey, stepped foot in Tanzania for the first time. Here she was struck by the vibrancy and passion of the people and country. The children’s love of learning and growing was unparalleled. She also struggled with seeing children out of school, or unprepared for it (in ripped or missing uniforms, without school supplies, etc.) On this trip, she also met a local man named Carles.

Carles had a heart for the children of Tanzania and a drive to provide education for children in his community. Less than a year later, they joined together to create Toa Tumaini Foundation and opened their first school, Hope Day Care, which supported eight students. The rest is history (or, told on our about page).

Our 13 years of experience building schools, partnering with communities, and educating children have led us to our current programming. Our programs are and have always been community-led, co-founded by a local Tanzanian leader, not built for the community but with the community. This ensures that our programs effectively meet the needs of the people we care for in a way that’s sustainable for the communities in which we work.

Surviving to thriving

Preschool student M loved coming to school every day. The only trouble was that she couldn’t see what her teachers wrote on the board.  Her family knew she likely needed glasses, but couldn’t afford her eye exam, let alone glasses.

Through generous donations, TTF could pay for M’s exam and glasses. Because thriving today means being able to see what you’re learning. M’s learning is no longer limited by her vision, and her family feels good knowing her needs are being met.

Make a tangible impact.

Your donation helps children attend school, stay in school, and pursue their dreams. Because Toa Tumaini is small and community-based, your gift stretches further, and you’ll see the very children you support grow and thrive.

Every dollar counts and is stewarded that way.

Education in Tanzania isn’t free, and with 44% of the population under age 15, more children need access to school every day. Your donation matters deeply.

But while we understand the urgency of educational access for Tanzanian children, we also understand the responsibility of stewarding your generosity. When you donate to our programs, you can rest easy knowing that our small, grassroots organization directs your dollars where they are needed most and where they can have an immediate impact.

As you get to know our students and staff’s stories, you’ll be able to witness how they thrive today and dream of tomorrow, all thanks to your generosity.
